This two-day course will teach the coding and application of the psychotherapy Q-sort technique with children and adolescents within clinical and research domains.
The Child Psychotherapy Q-Set (CPQ; Schneider & Jones, 2004) and the Adolescent Psychotherapy Q-Set (APQ) were developed to provide a language and rating procedure for describing and researching the therapeutic process in child and adolescent psychotherapy in clinically relevant terms in a form suitable for quantitative comparison and analysis. They are adaptations of the Psychotherapy Process Q-set (PQS) developed by Enrico Jones (1985; 2000), which has been widely used in research investigating the therapeutic process in adult treatments, and is recognized for its effectiveness in capturing the complexity of the psychotherapy process.
This course will give participants an introduction to the background and history of research exploring the therapeutic process in child and adolescent psychotherapy (across a range of treatment modalities), and will then give participants an opportunity to learn in detail about how the CPQ and APQ can be used as a clinical research tool, whether in single-case studies or in studies using larger samples. Those attending the course will be provided with copies of the training manual and will have the opportunity to develop their skills in rating audio- or video-taped sessions of psychotherapy with young people. The use of these instruments in supervision and as a training tool will also be explained.
An optional third day will introduce participants to ways of analyzing Q-data statistically in a range of research designs, from single-case studies to cross-case analyses.
Who is this course suitable for?
This training is suitable for clinical practitioners and researchers working with children and adolescents interested in using validated research measures (the CPQ and APQ) to learn more about the process of child and adolescent psychotherapy. Participants will develop systematic skills in detailed coding and analyzing of the psychotherapy process with young people.
Aims of course
To introduce participants to the history of process research in child and adolescent psychotherapy and to provide an opportunity to become a skilled rater of the psychotherapy Q-sort with children and adolescents. This includes the teaching of the manualised method of coding and reviewing of various child psychotherapy sessions, providing practice in the coding of the Q-sort.
