Early Years Parenting Unit now available to parents with personality difficulties
30 September 2011
The Mayor of Islington welcomes the Anna Freud Centre’s new programme as an excellent example of integrated working with troubled families. On 27th September the Mayor of Islington opened the Anna Freud Centre’s new unit for parents with personality difficulties and their children under five. This innovative service is the first of its kind and is made available through a grant from the Department for Education’s 'Improving Outcomes for Children, Young People and Families' fund. The integration of social services, adult mental health services and children’s services enables the unit to provide specialist support that puts the wellbeing of the family unit at the centre of its work. The unit’s 18 month therapeutic programme of support will help parents manage their own emotional states and enable them to be more aware of and responsive to their children's needs, with the goal of long term reduction in the frequency and intensity of contact with support services. There is no cost to families to attend.
The Mayor highlighted that by easing the formidable problems facing some families in this manner, the unit will improve the life chances of children under five and so have a positive impact on the community as a whole.
