Family Assessment Service

The Family Assessment Service (FAS) carries out independent assessments and reports for the family courts where children are involved in care proceedings. This service is commissioned by London Borough of Islington.
The Team
The members of this multi disciplinary team include a child psychiatrist, adult psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, child psychotherapist and social worker.
Clinical approach
In their reports the FAS clinicians give advice about children’s development and makes recommendations for the care and treatment of children and their parents. The clinical approach used includes the use of evidence based attachment, child development and adult mental health assessment tools.
Aims
Our aim is to see that children, their parents and the responsible professionals receive a comprehensive individual assessment with clear recommendations that can realistically promote children’s healthy development. The service is committed to evaluation and in collaboration with researchers at the Anna Freud Centre a DOH funded study of outcomes for children assessed in FAS to inform decision making about help for vulnerable children and their families is currently being completed.
