PDI Training: Administering and Coding the Parent Development Interview, 9th – 11th April 2012
Supporting bonding between carers and babies: individual and group interventions 12th- 14th April 2012
The Parent-Infant Project at the Anna Freud Centre, London, specialises in providing parent-infant psychotherapy for parents and their infants - in therapy rooms, in prisons, in homeless hostels, in community health settings. Psychoanalytic, attachment, neuroscience and trauma theories inform the work. The AFC model is unique in its focus on working directly with the baby. It has been evaluated in different settings, using reflective functioning measures in the parent and developmental outcomes in the infant to asses change.
The Parent Development Interview (PDI; Slade et al., 2004) is a semi-structured interview which captures parents’ representations of their children, of themselves as parents, and of the parent-child relationship. The interview can be used as a tool to assess the parent’s reflective functioning, which has been identified as one of the key predictors of infant attachment security, and the breakdown of this capacity has been linked with a number of risk factors for both parent and child. The interview and coding system have been widely used internationally for assessing the quality of parent-child relationships and for evaluating service outcomes.
To help practitioners apply the principles and techniques of the intervention model in their own work settings, and to become proficient in evaluation of reflective functioning in the parent in relation to their infant, the Anna Freud Centre will be offering an intensive course in Cape Town in the week preceding the 2012 WAIMH conference.
Each training lasts two and a half days. The trainings can be taken together or each can be taken on its own.
