History

Established as a programme in 2008, the role of the SDE is to contribute to making the AFC a world leading centre for evaluative practice in relation to child and adolescent mental health, drawing on both quantitative and qualitative techniques and a range of disciplines and methodologies developing innovative approaches to enable a sophisticated exploration of the impact of services.

Aims

SDE aims to contribute to the work of AFC through the following strands of work:

Projects

Hearing Voices

We are being supported by City Bridge Trust to evaluate the London Voice Collective, a service providing advice, support and workshops for young people who hear voices. The aim of the evaluation is to try to work out what aspects of the service are working well, and how we can improve it.

Service development and evaluation of Kidstime Workshops  (2008-2011)

Kidstime workshops are monthly events for parents and children where one or both parents have mental health problems. The workshops’ main aim is to explore and discuss mental health issues in a simple and non-stigmatising way. The evaluation of Kidstime was a small-scale exploratory study, aiming to provide a descriptive account of the Kidstime workshops model and to increase understanding of how it works. In order to achieve this, the evaluation also tried to capture the impact of the workshops on participants, as assessed by their views and experiences. The evaluation focused on Kidstime workshops delivered in three different sites (voluntary and statutory). Methods were mixed, and included semi-structured interviews with children and young people, parents, and professionals, participant observations of workshops, and audit data. This project was commissioned by the City Bridge Trust. The final report is now available here.
