The Family School was founded and is sponsored by the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families. It is a unique alternative provision free school in Central London for pupils aged 5-14 who have been excluded from mainstream school with serious emotional and behavioural issues, and their families. It combines high quality teaching and learning with a mental health curriculum in a non-stigmatising environment.
It has a dedicated staff of experienced teachers who have mental health awareness training and who are supported by mental health professionals of the Centre.
Combining teaching with elements from the most up-to-date mental health in schools integrative interventions (including the use of multi-family groups and mentalisation), the Family School seeks to ease behavioural and mental health-related blocks to learning and to provide educational opportunities that will keep pace, day-by-day, with the pupil’s renascent ability to learn and achieve.
The school opened in September 2014 and is fully subscribed with 25 students and their families attending. The capacity of the school is planned to increase over the next year to a steady state maximum of 48 families.
