Training in Community-Based Multimodal Treatment for Adolescents and Young Adults with Severe Psychiatric Disturbance

The Anna Freud Centre and the Marlborough Family Service, in association with linked adolescent services and University College London, have developed a community-based integrative, multimodal treatment project for adolescents and young adults with severe psychiatric disturbance.

Specifically for young people aged 15-21 with severe mental health disorders, the project is a home-based service for those normally requiring in-patient treatment.

The project aims to prevent the revolving door of removal to hospital of the young person from his or her home followed by a relapse on their return.

Funded by The John Lyon's Charity, the Centre has led on the development of a training programme to enable keyworkers to support young people and their families at home.

It offers a skills-based training that integrates multiple techniques across a range of modalities to be delivered by a keyworker in a home-based outreach intervention.

The overarching aim is to improve the quality of practice with young people which may prevent unnecessary inpatient admissions by providing a therapeutic alternative through the strengthening of local support systems.

The training is mainly aimed at those currently working in adolescent mental health services, including outreach services.

The training is delivered by senior practitioners of the Marborough Family Service and the Anna Freud Centre as well as linked adolescent services.

At the end of the training those attending will be competent to deliver a home-based treatment package that involves skills-based approaches drawn from a range of treatment modalities including structural family therapy, multifamily work, individual psychological work, and the activation of community resources.
