The Family School, London

The Family School was founded and is sponsored by the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families.  It is a unique alternative provision free school in Central London for pupils aged 5 - 14, who have been excluded from mainstream school with serious and behavioural issues, and their families.

The Family School combines high quality teaching and learning with a mental health curriculum in a non-stigmatising environment.  It has a dedicated staff of experienced teachers who have mental health awareness training and who are supported by mental health professionals of the Centre.

Combining teaching with elements from the most up-to-date mental health in schools integrative interventions (including the use of multi-family groups and mentalization), The Family School seeks to ease behavioural and mental health-related blocks to learning and to provide educational opportunities that will keep pace, day-by-day, with the pupil’s renascent ability to learn and achieve.

In line with the Department of Education's commitment to inspect all free schools within the first 3 years, an Ofsted inspection team visited the Family School in June 2017.  The Family School received an Outstanding grade for their work which highlighted key outcomes for pupils including:

  • Over time, 64% of pupils who have attended the school since it opened have been successfully reintegrated into mainstream school within the school's own target of four terms
  • Of the pupils who have returned to mainstream schools since the school opened, 95% have retained their school places.  This shows that they are extremely well-prepared for the next stage of their education when they leave school
  • After a short settling in period, pupils make substantial progress in improving their behaviour for learning.  Leaders track and monitor behaviour rigorously to ensure that pupils, parents and carers have a clear target to aspire to that will support their return to mainstream school.
