Improving decision making around alternative care

Where children are on the edge of care or families are going through court proceedings, the duration and cost of court proceedings, as well as the harm to children, can be significant. The Centre works to improve decision making around alternative care to reduce the length and expense of court proceedings and their impact on children.

Improving multi-disciplinary assessments for care proceedings

Improving multi-disciplinary assessments for care proceedings

The Family Assessment Service works to improve multi-disciplinary assessments for families going through care proceedings and to promote outcomes in the best interests of children who have experienced complex trauma and adversity. Almost all assessments involve two or more clinicians with different expertise including Clinical Psychology, Psychiatry, Social Work, Family Therapy, Child Psychotherapy and Play Therapy and all actively use the broad expertise in the team through regular consultation.

This team also has expertise working with children and families who have experienced acute trauma (such as death or serious injury as a result of domestic violence), often in collaboration with police or in the context of criminal proceedings.

Community based specialist parenting assessments

Community based specialist parenting assessments

The Early Years Parenting Unit (EYPU) at the Centre collaborates with Children’s Social Care to resolve complex cases where children are on the edge of care in less time.

The EYPU combines an assessment of capacity to change with treatment that addresses parents’ personality difficulties, parenting problems, and child development concerns.
