Self-help and alcohol misuse
Insufficient evidence – there either hasn’t been any research on this treatment option or there is a small amount of evidence with unclear conclusions.
Self-help can include engaging with voluntary groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous that use 12-step programmes or internet-based self-help programmes.
Although self-help is often used by adults, it should not be offered as your only treatment for alcohol misuse. Any self-help resources or groups you are offered as part of your treatment should be specifically designed for your age group.
Treatments outlined on these webpages may not be available in every local area. It’s important that you discuss with your GP or mental health professional the treatment options available to you.
