About this webinar
Reflective Parenting, involving parental mentalizing, is turning out to be a key to mental health.
Drawing on decades of practice, Dr Sheila Redfern translates the best of developmental research on attachment and mentalizing into clear, practical guidance that invites parents to look inward as they nurture the children in their care. The tools of the model are practical and accessible to all parents and the ideas are accessible and immediately useful to parents and professionals working with them.
Reflective Parenting empowers parents, carers, teachers and therapists alike to understand the emotional worlds of children—and their own—so they can respond with attuned, confident compassion.
This webinar takes participants through the components of the Reflective Parenting model and is an invaluable session for anyone committed to fostering secure, healthy relationships across the generations.

Dr Sheila Redfern, Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Head of Family Trauma at Anna Freud
Dr Sheila Redfern is Head of the Family Trauma Department within the Clinical Division at Anna Freud, where they lead a multi-disciplinary team of therapists. With over 30 years of experience, they have worked extensively with children, families, and professionals across both clinical and research settings. Prior to joining Anna Freud 11 years ago, they spent 20 years as an NHS Consultant Clinical Psychologist in CAMHS services across London.
Their work focuses on developing and delivering therapeutic interventions for parents, carers, and children who are in care, on the edge of care, or part of adoptive families. They specialise in mentalization-based approaches for both families and professionals, and previously established and led an MBT-A (Mentalization-Based Treatment for Adolescents) service for self-harming young people in CAMHS.
Sheila is an accredited MBT-A practitioner and supervisor, an advanced-level trained MBT practitioner, and a listed MBT practitioner. In addition, they are an accredited Video Interaction Guidance (VIG) practitioner and experienced trainer in mentalization-based interventions, particularly in group settings. Their areas of interest also include working with neurodivergent children and young people, and they are trained in a wide range of assessment tools, including the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), Autism Diagnostic Interview, Story Stems, Child Attachment Interview (CAI), and Parent Development Interview (PDI).
They are the innovator behind the Reflective Parenting and Reflective Fostering models, designed to support parents and carers in building stronger relationships with children. Most recently, they led a three-year randomised control trial (RCT) of the Reflective Fostering Programme — the largest fostering intervention study ever conducted in the UK.
