About this course

The theme of the next annual AMBIT Conference will be whatever you'd like it to be.

Yes, you read that correctly. Over the years the AMBIT Conference has been shaped by the AMBIT Project team here at the Anna Freud Centre and followed a traditional format of prepared presentations and some shared discussion. We value all of our previous presenters and the contribution they have made not only to AMBIT but to making our conferences informative and diverse learning experiences. However, we would like to try something a bit different this year.

AMBIT is rapidly expanding across the UK, and overseas, with over 110 teams across statutory and voluntary sectors having received training in AMBIT. The AMBIT wheel is symbolic of four quadrants:

  • Working with your Client
  • Working with your Team
  • Working with your Network
  • Learning at Work

The Wheel reminds us of the fluidity of our approach which makes AMBIT unique and adaptable. Whilst there is much to be said for the traditional conference model, many of us will have been to conferences that have fascinated and inspired us in equal measure but have failed to lead to genuine changes in our practice before being resigned to our minds’ overflowing dustbins of forgotten training and conferences. We fear that traditional conferences can sometimes risk leaning too far towards top-down “respect for evidence” and thus away from the equally important “respect for local practice and expertise”. In keeping with the AMBIT stance, we hope to achieve balance between the two with this year’s Unconference. Wikipedia defines it as: “..a wide range of gatherings that try to avoid one or more aspects of a conventional conference, such as fees, sponsored presentations, and top-down organization”*. The Unconference will be an opportunity for the AMBIT Community of Practice to gather and share learning. It will let you decide what you want to hear about, let you ask the questions, and let you lead us on what works best for you.

How It Works

  1. Book your place!
  2. Once your booking is confirmed you will receive two coloured cards by post. Red card: What do you want to hear about? Blue card: What would you like to talk about (more details below)
  3. Show up on the Day!

It's as easy as 1, 2, 3!

We have only 60 places available for the Unconference and these will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Unfortunately due to the limited number of places and vastly growing community of practice, we are restricting tickets to three per team and/or organisation. If you would like to purchase more than three for your team, please email Donnelle Dabreo ( so you can be added to a waiting list. If any tickets become available closer to the date of the event Donnelle will contact you in the order received.

Once your place is confirmed, we will send two cards by post (so please ensure your postal address is correct when booking your place).

Red card: What would you like to hear?

Blue card: What would you like to talk about?

This is your opportunity to shape the Unconference. Red cards received with similar topics will be allocated a room on the day of the conference and together you will shape conversations/discussions around these topics. The Blue cards are for those who have something they would like to share with others, either around work you are currently doing which is AMBIT-influenced or just a related topic you feel is worth sharing. On the day we will allocate a time slot for you to share this with others. Anything goes, but here are some ideas to get you started:

  • Share some outcomes from your service
  • Volunteer to facilitate a discussion on a particular AMBIT topic
  • Present a case study to be followed up by group discussion
  • Share some video of your team role-playing a way of working that you have developed
  • Facilitate a training exercise that you have developed to explore certain AMBIT ideas

There will also be a "Cafe Corner" where you can sit with colleagues, either those you know, or those you don't, to talk and share ideas.

For those who are new to AMBIT, an introductory talk will be available, delivered by the Unconference facilitators.

As part of gathering feedback for the Unconference, and to garner a general sense of how people are finding AMBIT or just the Unconference, we will be video recording through the day so feel free to wave and say hello! If for any reason you are uncomfortable with being recorded please let Donnelle Dabreo know.
