About this course

The Anna Freud Centre is launching a year-long free programme of public seminars  and inviting all to join us as we contemplate the future of children and young people’s mental health. The Transformation Seminars is an inaugural series of free lectures open to the public to celebrate the Anna Freud’s Centre’s new building, the Kantor Centre of Excellence (N1 9JH) and ask some of the most eminent names in mental health what would most contribute to a transformation of our approach to mental health.

To be notified when the next seminars become available to book on to, please join our training mailing list: sign up to hear about new dates.

About this seminar

Arts participation (singing, dancing, going to museums, etc) can improve young people’s health and wellbeing. However, opportunities to participate in the arts may depend on where we live. The occurrence of arts and cultural programmes is local specific, with disadvantaged areas typically providing fewer opportunities for arts and cultural engagement activities than less deprived places where schools, local authorities and service providers have more facilities and resources. Geographical differences in access to and participation in arts and cultural activities may influence our health and wellbeing. Therefore, it is important to understand the arts-health relationship at a geographical level and to ensure that every individual has an equal opportunity to access to and participate in arts activities. This topic is particularly relevant for public policy, given the cut back on creative and arts classes in schools and given the advocacy of a place-based implementation of ‘social prescribing’ that is designed for GPs to improve wellbeing by putting people in contact with community activities.

This seminar will focus on three main questions:

  • How does arts participation improve children’s and adolescents’ wellbeing (including self-esteem, behavioural and psychological adjustment and health-related behaviours)? What are the potential mechanisms?
  • Who participates in what kinds of arts?
  • Does place matter?
