About this course

Schools across the country are working to improve mental health and wellbeing but learning is not being systematically captured and shared.

In this course you will learn about the experiences and findings of the HeadStart programme, and how these can inform the development of support for mental wellbeing in your school.

The HeadStart programme took a ‘test and learn’ approach, and strategic investment from The National Lottery Community Fund allowed theory, research and best practice to be applied in interventions and approaches in six local areas.

In this course, we will consider planning, delivery and evaluation of support, and the benefits of taking a ‘test and learn’ stance.

Themes will include:

• peer support models
• student engagement and voice
• supporting parents
• multi-agency approaches
• working with the wider community

For each theme we will share approaches taken by local partnerships and reflect on their experiences and learning from implementing each type of activity.

Participants will benefit from case examples and practical ideas for interventions, complementing the development of a whole-school approach.

Who is this course suitable for

Staff in schools who support mental health and wellbeing including senior mental health leads (SMHL); SENDCOs, pastoral support teams. (Prior attendance at SMHL training is not necessary, however the training has been designed to complement this and other AFC courses.)

Aims of the course

Participants will learn to:

• apply recent learning to their school context when developing a whole-school approach to mental wellbeing
• plan wellbeing support and intervention that draws from evaluation research and implementation learning
• integrate monitoring and evaluation into planning and delivery.

Training Formats: Online and Face-to-Face delivery

This training will be delivered live online or face-to-face, in London and Manchester.  Dates and times will vary according to format so please carefully check the dates and times for individual courses before booking.

The online platform Zoom will be used to deliver the live elements of this training. Please ensure you meet the system requirements for Zoom before booking on to any online live courses. Before the training, please test your equipment is working by going to Zoom.us/test and follow the instructions.

The online platform, Blackboard Learn, will be used to deliver any self-guided learning and will provide access to handouts, materials and homework. Most laptops/ PCs/ MACs/ iPads and android devices work with Blackboard. Blackboard is best accessed through Google Chrome.
