Change is complex. Establishing a whole or school college approach to mental health is a major transformational task. Yet increasingly this is what schools are expected to deliver. The rewards are clear. Research shows what teachers already know: happier children do better and have higher attendance rates than those whose problems are unresolved.

So how do you go about it? The Anna Freud Centre has launched its 5 Steps to Mental Health and Wellbeing Framework, a simple, free and interactive tool to help schools and college develop a whole setting approach on their own terms.

We will be holding five seminars throughout the year based on each of the steps: Leading change, Working together, Understanding need, Promoting wellbeing and Supporting staff.

About this seminar

This seminar, chaired by Jaime Smith, is the second of the series and focuses on our step: Understanding Need. We will be looking at how measurement can be simple, can help identify which children need support and ensure that your investments are based on evidence. It’s surprisingly easy. Our tools are free and we want to share them with you.

Our expert speakers include Professor Jessica Deighton, (Professor of Child Mental Health and Wellbeing, UCL; Director of Innovation Evaluation and Dissemination, AFNCCF; Director of Evidence Based Practice Unit, UCL & AFNCCF) and Nick Tait (Programme Manager, Child Outcomes Research Consortium, and previous Headteacher). Together they will discuss how schools and colleges can assess and meet the mental health needs of their pupils and student, and consider some of the following questions:

1. How do you identify pupils at risk?

2. How do you measure and monitor the wellbeing of your pupils?

3. How do you develop and measure interventions available to support those pupils?

There will be time for questions and answers towards the end of the session.

Who is this seminar suitable for?

All school leaders, teachers, school staff and mental health workers in schools, educational psychologists, and any allied professionals interested in supporting mental health in schools and colleges.
