This is two day advanced training for qualified DIT practitioners to apply the DIT model to a complex patient group in secondary care. The training assumes existing knowledge of working with the 16 session model of DIT and that clinicians have the requisite competence. The DIT CC course focuses on modifications and extensions to the model and emphasises particular skills, like mentalising, developing epistemic trust, stabilisation techniques and risk management. The adapted DIT CC model is a 26-session approach that is based on the published results of a pilot study carried out in Newham (Journal of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy, 33(7) 1-22; August 2019.

The training days include pre-course reading, an overview of the new model and opportunities to apply new skills.

The second part of the training consists of thirteen hours of supervision with one DITCC training case, at an additional fee of £2,400.

Aims of this course

To familiarise participants with the revised model of DIT for secondary care patients with complex depression (among other applications).

The course is necessary to continue with supervised practice of one complex case to become an accredited DIT-CC practitioner.

The course provides opportunities to practice the new techniques introduced including emphasis on mentalisation, stabilisation and risk management, identifying and working with Relationship interfering behaviours and addressing epistemic mistrust in this population group.

Who is this course suitable for?

The course is suitable for qualified DIT practitioners, DIT supervisors and DIT trainers. It is a prerequisite to have completed an accredited DIT training in order to participate in the course.

Becoming a DIT CC practitioner

The DITCC training held at the Centre is the first stage to becoming a DITCC Practitioner. The next stage involves having thirteen hours of supervision with one DITCC training case. This is typically structured as half an hour supervision per patient over 26 sessions. In addition, two additional tape recordings will need to be submitted for rating. This will be completed with one of the DITCC model originators. Trainees are required to start supervision within 1 year of finishing the training and successfully complete their cases within 2 years of the training.

The cost of supervision is £2,400.

Research and Effectiveness of DIT

According to a pilot study (Rao et al, 2019) applying DIT to secondary care patients with greater complexity based on a 26-sessions model. There was a focus on building epistemic trust, addressing the mistrust the individual feels in relation to social communications, including the therapeutic relationship. Results showed a decline in measures of depression, anxiety and overall clinical severity with an increase in psychological well-being. More than half the patients on the GAD and around a third on the PHQ, CORE and SOS were no longer in the clinical range following treatment. Roughly two-thirds of patients showed reliable improvement across measures.
