About this course

In this course, we will cover the implementation of a Mentalizing approach to eating disorders in general, and describe how MBT-ED can be used in the treatment of severe eating disorders, especially those that have not responded to other treatments such as Family Based Therapy or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. We will describe how mentalizing can be used as a guiding principle for a multi-disciplinary team, whether or not MBT-ED is provided.

MBT-ED has been developed in Oslo and London and a book on the subject “Hunger: Mentalization based treatments for eating disorders” by the three  tutors of this course is about to be published by Springer. A recent randomised controlled trial of MBT-ED in patients with eating disorders and symptoms of borderline personality disorder  was not conclusive but favoured MBT-ED over control treatment in reducing symptoms of eating disorder.

We believe that MBT-ED is a rational choice for treatment of patients with eating disorders who remain unwell after first line treatments. We also believe that a mentalizing approach can enhance  team effectiveness and generally improve the quality of care.

We will introduce the concepts of mentalizing and MBT as they are applied to eating disorder teams, patients with eating disorders and their families. We will describe how MBT-ED can be introduced into a treatment programme and how supervision and research can be organized.
