About this course

This is a 2 day orientation course for those who attended the pilot Autism Inpatient Train the Trainer training course in 2022.

The Anna Freud Centre in partnership with AT-Autism have been commissioned to develop and deliver a ground-breaking National Autism Trainer Programme funded by NHS England.

This training course is for staff from Children and Young People Mental Health inpatient settings. This is a Train the Trainer programme, meaning delegates who successfully complete the autism course will be equipped to then co-deliver the training in their own settings and join our Community of Practice.

This training is co-designed, co-produced and co-delivered with autistic people. It aims to ensure that autistic adults receive appropriate, person-centred care, and aims to reframe narratives through an understanding of different perspectives.

AFC and AT-Autism are committed to creating lasting impact by changing mindsets. Autism is not a disease and autistic people should live happy, healthy lives in their communities.

Autistic individuals receiving mental health care must be supported by people who understand sensory and communication differences, legislation, and the duty to make reasonable adjustments.

The curriculum is co-designed by Dr Georgia Pavlopoulou (Programme Director, National Autism Trainer Programme at Anna Freud Centre), Dr Ruth Moyse (AT-Autism Director), and 10 autistic experts by science and experience. A pair of two tutors (at least one of them will be autistic) will co-deliver each training session.

What format will the training take?

The online course is co-produced with autistic people and will be delivered by renowned experts and experienced trainers from Anna Freud Centre and AT-Autism, with contributions from experts by experience. The online training will be delivered to cohorts of up to 18 delegates. The small cohort size will enable our trainers to create safe learning spaces and for all delegates to meaningfully engage with each other and the course materials.

Our training methods and formats will include:

  • Engaging materials via an online hub, including personal accounts and short films, stimulating debate and creating memorable learning moments.
  • Evidence-based training and resources, combining research evidence, clinical practice and lived experience.
  • Skills development and learning consolidation through group presentations and reflective discussions.
  • Digital assessment tools and certification.

Post-training, all attendees will be supported by our bespoke Community of Practice and 37 autistic experts by experience to deliver and embed our approach with colleagues in their own settings.

We strongly encourage delegates attending this training to be released from work during their attendance so they can fully engage with the content and reflect on their practice outside of their work environment.

Delegates will be asked to keep their camera on during the training to enable and contribute to a safe, reflective space for the entire cohort.

If you have any special requirements when attending the training course, please give us details when you complete the Booking registration form so we can help to accommodate this.

Aims of course

Training attendees will:

  • Gain an understanding of barriers experienced by autistic people in community and hospital environments, potential difficulties they face during transitions between settings, and the risks of institutionalisation for autistic individuals with or without a learning disability.
  • Find examples of existing good practice and innovative approaches of working with, rather than on or for, autistic individuals.
  • Gain expertise, skills and practical strategies to meet the needs of autistic people and their families, as members of multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary teams, and as wider teams of staff for a whole of system approach.
  • Reduce restrictive practice; model collaborative, trauma informed and experience sensitive values; and promote a positive narrative about neurodiversity.
