About this course
Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is recommended by NICE guidelines as the first-line intervention for Children and Young People with Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). The cognitive model of PTSD in children and young people (Meiser-Stedman, 2002) will be presented and explained.
The training will cover:
- How children and families react to traumatic events,
- Risk factors for PTSD in children and young people
- The cognitive model of PTSD in children and young people
- TF-CBT for children and young people, including engagement, implementing this intervention, common barriers, and adaptations for multiple traumatic events
- The evidence base for TF-CBT
The workshop will use a variety of training methods including interactive presentation of theory with case illustrations (with clients’ consent), small group discussion and opportunities to practice skills.
- Who is this course suitable for?
Practitioners who have a therapeutic role with children and young people who have experienced traumatic events. TF-CBT has been used effectively with pre-schoolers, and although those working with pre-school age children should find aspects of the training that they can adapt, it is principally intended for those working with children and young people of school age.
Practitioners should have ideally had some previous training in CBT.
For all participants, this course is intended to increase their understanding of how traumatic events affect children and young people. It is expected that even those with no previous knowledge or experience of CBT will develop an improved understanding of trauma which should influence their practice. However, this two-day workshop does not on its own equip a practitioner to offer Cognitive Behavioural Therapy to Children and Young People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. Those suitably trained in CBT and who continue to receive suitable supervision should feel competent to provide CBT specifically for children and young people with PTSD.
- Aims of the course
By the end of this workshop, the participants should:
- Be familiar with and understand the cognitive model of PTSD
- Be aware of how children and young people commonly react to traumatic events, (including PTSD) and how the cognitive model can understand these reactions
- Understand how to intervene effectively using TF-CBT, taking into account developmental and systemic issues
- Be familiar with the evidence supporting TF-CBT for children and young people with PTSD.
