Overview

I qualified as a clinical psychologist in 1996, and have worked since then with children, young people and families across many different services that make up the Islington Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service.  I completed the Oxford Diploma in Cognitive Therapy 1999, and draw on a variety of models in my clinical work, I have formed a particular interest in using cognitive behavioural therapy in child and family settings.  Peter Fuggle and Sandra Dunsmuir and I set up the UCL/Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families Postgraduate Certificate/Diploma/MSc in CBT for Children and Young People (CYP), teaching students from a range of professional backgrounds who work with CYP in a variety of settings how to incorporate CBT ideas into their work. I find it really stimulating to collaborate with the experienced CBT practitioners from health, education and social care who make up the course staff team, and our book (‘Fuggle, P., Dunsmuir, S. & Curry, V. (2013). Introduction. In CBT with children, young people and families’) on CBT with CYP was one of the outcomes of this. I also have also found it extremely enjoyable to teach professionals from such varied backgrounds, who bring multiple perspectives and amazing creativity to their CBT practice, and developed my own CBT work with families as a result.
