Parent Coaching for Pupil Progress

Involving and engaging parents is key to helping children who have been excluded from school learn to trust adults, modify their behaviour and sustain changes so that they can successfully resume their school career.

Our approach

Involving and engaging parents is at the heart of our approach in The Family School. This has proved highly successful, but many Alternative Provisions do not have the resource to sustain an extensive parent engagement programme.

We have developed a key element of our parent learning programme, Parent Coaching for Pupil Progress (PCPP), into a 10-week programme for AP settings so they can support parents and achieve better educational outcomes for children.  

The programme is aimed at pupils in key stages 1 - 4, who have been excluded from mainstream school as a result of maladaptive and anti-social behaviour. We are trialling this approach supported by the Department for Education’s Innovation Fund in three AP settings in London, Barnsley and Cornwall with a view to setting up hubs that will go on to train other APs using this approach

The parent coaching programme will enable AP settings to create an emotionally secure environment in order to:

  • Develop children’s ‘executive functioning’ skills to manage feelings and relationships so that they can interact more effectively in groups such as a classroom setting;
  • Improve teacher-child relationship and build a child’s capacity to feel confident that they can rely on important adults such as parents and teachers. We call this ‘epistemic trust’.
  • Reduce parent-child conflict and enable parents to better coach their children
  • Improve a child’s engagement with learning and therefore their attendance and attainment.

What we aim to achieve

 We expect the course to deliver the following:

  • Parents/carers will be better able to manage hostile and defiant behaviour
  • Parents/carers will be better able to coach children in improved executive functioning and support children through difficult transitions.
  • Parents/carers will be more engaged in their child’s education

This will bring about the following outcomes for children:

  • Improved social competence and relationships with others
  • More effective anger management
  • Increased resilience and problem-solving ability
  • Improved social cognition skills
  • Self-management and task completion
  • Reduction in underachievement and disengagement from school
  • Improvements in academic progression
  • Increased parental involvement in children’s education
