Carbon reduction plan

Climate change has a profound negative impact on all of us, and on mental health, so we’re committed to reducing our emissions and achieving net zero by 2030.

Sustainability statement

The Anna Freud Centre recognises that climate change has a sustained negative impact on all our lives, and particularly on young people and their mental health. We are committed to working in partnership with others to ensure that in all areas of our activities we can drive real and lasting positive environmental impact.

Commitment to achieving Net Zero

The Anna Freud Centre is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2030.

Calculating our emissions footprint

To set clear targets and implement initiatives to reduce our carbon emissions, we have calculated our emissions footprint based on the year ending August 2022.

Baseline year 2022

  • Scope 1 - Direct greenhouse gas emissions that occur from sources that are controlled or  owned by the Anna Freud Centre (e.g., fuel combustion in boilers, furnaces, vehicles). Total (tCO2e) 80.55 / 68%

  • Scope 2 - Indirect greenhouse gas emissions associated with the purchase of electricity, steam, heat and cooling (gas and electricity use in buildings). Total (tCO2e) 36.71 / 31%

  • Scope 3 - All sources not within The Anna Freud Centre’s scope 1 and 2, including:

    • Business travel (vehicle, air and rail)

    • Employee commuting

    • Disposal and treatment of waste generated in operations

    • Printing, paper

    • Upstream transportation and distribution

    • Downstream transportation and distribution Total (tCO2e) 0.95 / 1%

Total emissions = 118.21 tCO2e

Although the charity has a long-standing commitment to sustainability, and an EcoAudit was delivered by SustainQuality Ltd in 2019, there is no historic baseline for Anna Freud. The move to a new building (see below) in April 2019 supported efforts in this area, but we had not been occupying the building at full capacity for 12 months before the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting lockdowns and remote working.

Reducing our carbon footprint

Emissions reduction targets

To continue our progress to achieving net zero, we have adopted the following carbon reduction targets.

We project that carbon emissions will decrease over the next five years to 28 tCO2e by 2027. This is a reduction of 25%.

Declaration

This carbon reduction plan has been completed in accordance with the Procurement Policy Note 06/21 and associated guidance and reporting standard for carbon reduction plans

Emissions have been reported and recorded in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the GHG Reporting Protocol corporate standard and uses the appropriate Government emission conversion factors for greenhouse gas company reporting.

Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions have been reported in accordance with SECR requirements, and the required subset of Scope 3 emissions have been reported in accordance with the published reporting standard for Carbon Reduction Plans and the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard

The Anna Freud Centre’s Board of Trustees and company directors have reviewed and approved this plan.
