Expert advice and guidance videos for nursery staff

This series of films, featuring some of Anna Freud's child mental health experts, aim to provide help and guidance to nursery staff on how to manage a range of different issues.

Nurseries are on the frontline when it comes to supporting babies, infants and young children's mental wellbeing. Staff working in nurseries are ideally placed to recognise and respond to early signs of mental health difficulties young children and their families. The below series of films, featuring some of Anna Freud's child mental health experts, aim to provide help and guidance to nursery staff on how to manage a range of different issues.

Subjects include:

  • How to manage challenging behaviour;

  • How to offer support to children who may have experienced trauma or abuse, and;

  • How best to support those who have suffered a bereavement.

Applying Attachment Theory in the Criminal Justice System

This webinar is an opportunity to hear about attachment theory and what it means for practitioners working in the Early Years in England. As well as an overview of attachment theory, attendees will also hear about a critique of the theory, particularly from a wider social perspective and learn how to apply theory to practice in a culturally-sensitive way. Speakers will use the criminal justice system as a case study of how to apply attachment theory in a real world setting but the take-aways will also be applicable to practitioners working in the wider early years.

Early Years and the Transition to School

In this session our speakers will bring the knowledge and expertise from their practice to explore what it means to be school ready during this key Early Years milestone. Sharing the experience of the child and their parents or carers will be at the centre of our discussions. As will the need for an inclusive approach to transition and the importance of play.

Cost of living webinar: Supporting families in early years

In the latest of our free Early Years in Mind webinars, the panel reflected on what the cost of living crisis means for children in the early years, their families and early years providers. Our speakers shared the current contexts they are working in, from practice to policy and research, to talk about the different ways in which they are supporting children in the early years whose families are experiencing poverty.

Trauma and repair webinar

In this webinar, without downplaying the effects of trauma, our panel will acknowledge the realities through a lens of repair. Facilitated by the Chair, Dr Abi Miranda, the panel discuss a range of topics that highlight best practice in the context of trauma. For example, the panel discuss effective multi-disciplinary working with social workers, providing a “good enough” online service for adoptive parents, and celebrating nursery cultures that foster belonging and anti-racist practice.

Supporting dads

This webinar reflects on the Mind the Dad programme, which supports new dads transitioning to fatherhood, here at the Anna Freud Centre. There are also reflections and learnings from experienced practitioners and lived experienced insight from an LGBTQI+ fostering experience.
