Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) for Children and Young People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

An intervention treatment for children and young people with post-traumatic stress disorder.

About this training

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is recommended in the NICE guidelines as the first-line intervention for children and young people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This training introduces the cognitive model of PTSD in children and young people, developed by Meiser-Stedman (2002).

The training covers:

  • how children and families typically respond to traumatic events

  • risk factors for developing PTSD in children and young people

  • the cognitive model of PTSD in children and young people

  • delivering TF-CBT, including strategies for engagement, addressing common barriers and adapting for multiple traumatic events

  • the evidence base supporting TF-CBT.

The workshop will use a variety of training methods, including interactive presentations with case illustrations (shared with clients’ consent), small group discussions, and opportunities to practice skills.

Aims of this training

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • understand the cognitive model of PTSD

  • recognise common reactions to trauma in children and young people, including PTSD, and understand these using the cognitive model

  • apply TF-CBT effectively, considering developmental and systemic factors

  • be familiar with the evidence base supporting TF-CBT for children and young people with PTSD.

Who should attend?

This training is recommended for practitioners working therapeutically with children and young people who have experienced traumatic events. Attendees should have prior training and experience in CBT, as this is essential for implementing trauma-focused CBT in clinical practice following the training.
