Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) for Children and Young People with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

An intervention treatment for children and young people with post-traumatic stress disorder.

About this training

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (TF-CBT) is recommended in the NICE guidelines as the first-line intervention for children and young people with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). This training will introduce and explain the cognitive model of PTSD in children and young people, developed by Meiser-Stedman (2002).

The training will cover:

  • How children and families typically respond to traumatic events.

  • Risk factors for developing PTSD in children and young people.

  • The cognitive model of PTSD in children and young people.

  • Delivering TF-CBT, including strategies for engagement, implementation, addressing common barriers and making adaptations for multiple traumatic events.

  • The evidence base supporting TF-CBT.

The workshop will use a variety of training methods, including interactive presentations of theory with case illustrations (shared with clients’ consent), small group discussions, and opportunities to practice skills.

This is a two-day training session, usually scheduled from 9:30am to 4:30pm (UK time).

The training will be delivered online via Zoom. Joining links will be sent to participants closer to the training date.

Aims of this training

By the end of this workshop, participants will:

  • Understand the cognitive model of PTSD.

  • Be aware of common reactions to trauma in children and young people, including PTSD, and how these can be understood using the cognitive model.

  • Know how to intervene effectively using TF-CBT, with consideration of developmental and systemic factors.

  • Be familiar with the evidence base supporting TF-CBT for children and young people with PTSD.

Who is this training for?

This training is recommended for practitioners in a therapeutic role with children and young people who have experienced traumatic events.

Attendees should have prior training and experience in CBT as this is essential for implementing trauma-focused CBT in clinical practice following the training.
