Prof Rachel Hiller – chair
Rachel is an Associate Professor in Child & Adolescent Mental Health at University College London (UCL). She is also the Head of Postgraduate Studies at Anna Freud and Co-Director of the UK Trauma Council. Rachel is a member of the Board of Directors for the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ISTSS).
Rachel’s research focuses on complex child trauma and adversity, with a particular focus on the mental health and wellbeing of children who have a social worker (including those who are in care). Her work here spans investigating psychological and social mechanisms linking trauma and adversity to mental health, as well as the effectiveness and implementation of scalable interventions across social care and mental health settings.
Prof Kristine Langhoff
Prof Kristine Langhoff is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Social Work and Social Care at the University of Sussex. She holds a Master of Social Work and a PhD from Arizona State University in the United States, where she worked as a clinical social worker in the voluntary sector, supporting adults and young people involved in the criminal justice system, as well as individuals affected by sexual violence.
With 16 years of experience developing and delivering trauma-focused group interventions for survivors of sexual violence and exploitation, Prof Langhoff has trained widely on trauma-informed approaches to multi-disciplinary practice with both adults and children. Her teaching spans the BA and MA Social Work programmes, the BA and MA in Childhood and Youth Studies, and Continuing Professional Development programmes.
Her research focuses on young people's experiences of extra-familial harm and related child protection responses, creative and participatory methods, and trauma-informed practices for supporting survivors of abuse and violence.
Shumela Ahmed
Shumela Ahmed is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of Resilience Learning Partnership, a growing social enterprise dedicated to embedding lived experience at the heart of public policy design across the UK.
A teacher and educator by trade and an activist at heart, Shumela is a firm believer in the transformative power of education. Having left school at fourteen and later returning to education as an adult, she understands first-hand how learning can equip those from disadvantaged backgrounds with the tools to succeed.
