A specialist refresher day focusing on the SPELL Framework.

About this training

This full day National Autism Trainer Programme (NATP) specialist refresher day will focus on the SPELL Framework. It will be a repeat of the SPELL Framework Specialist Refresher Day that we ran in December 2023 and will include the following topics:

  • Moving from behaviours of concerns to understanding the environment

  • Discussions of workplace scenarios

  • Auditing: Where do we start from?

  • Use of SPELL in times of crisis

The SPELL framework is: Structure; Positive attitudes, approaches and expectations; Empathy; Low arousal; Links.

SPELL is a framework for understanding and supporting the needs of autistic children and adults. SPELL focuses on five principles which have been identified as vital elements of best practice when supporting autistic individuals. It also looks at ways environments and approaches may need to be changed to best support the needs of an individual.

The SPELL framework recognises that every person is individual and will have unique needs and encourages people to bear this in mind when planning any form of intervention. The SPELL framework can be used with any autistic person regardless of their age, educational level or support needs
