Dr Janine Sternberg

Dr Sternberg teaches on the professional doctorate in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy, which provides a professional training for those wishing to work therapeutically with children and families in the NHS. 

Dr Sternberg’s primary research interest is in exploring the usefulness of infant observation as a way of contributing to the training of psychoanalytically informed psychotherapists.

Dr Sternberg trained as a Child and Adolescent Psychotherapist at the Tavistock Clinic before training as an adult psychotherapist at the BAP (now bpf). She worked for many years in the National Health Service, at a local CAMHs and then at the Tavistock Mulberry Bush Day Unit, before moving to the Portman Clinic. For the last few years she has been Clinical Course Director and involved in supervising trainees on a number of child psychotherapy trainings, as well as consulting to qualified staff. She works in private practice as well.

Dr Sternberg is the author of  ‘Infant Observation at the Heart of Training’ Karnac  2005.    

And co-editor  with Cathy Urwin of Infant Observation and Research: Emotional Processes in Everyday lives'  Routledge 2012
