Skills training and alcohol misuse

Some evidence – there is enough evidence to indicate that this can be a helpful treatment option.

Skills training focuses on helping you to refuse offers to drink alcohol and a range of other life skills. For example, school-based programmes often focus on:

  • problem-solving
  • decision-making
  • skills for resisting influences from other people and the media
  • increasing self-control
  • boosting self-esteem
  • coping strategies for stress
  • general social and assertive skills

You could be offered a skills training programme to increase your resilience and reduce your risk of alcohol misuse. Your professional might also suggest this kind of training for your parents or carers if they feel that could be helpful.

Treatments outlined on these webpages may not be available in every local area. It’s important that you discuss with your GP or mental health professional the treatment options available to you. You can also search for services near you on our Youth Wellbeing Directory and find out more about referral processes here.
