Family based therapy for bipolar depression
Some evidence – there is enough evidence to indicate that this can be a helpful treatment option.
Family-based therapy is recommended as a second option of psychological therapy in bipolar depression. This means it should be offered to you if you have already tried cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) or interpersonal therapy (IPT) which did not improve your symptoms.
Family-based treatment has been studied in depression in young people (but not specifically in young people with bipolar depression), and attachment-based family therapy was found to be helpful.
Treatments outlined on these webpages may not be available in every local area. It’s important that you discuss with your GP or mental health professional the treatment options available to you.
