About this training

Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) is a semi-structured, IAPT-approved brief (16 sessions) psychodynamic therapy for mood disorder. Initial studies of DIT suggest its effectiveness with individuals in primary care with symptoms of anxiety and depression. The protocol was designed on the basis of the work of the Expert Reference Group on clinical competencies, which identified key components drawn from manualized psychoanalytic/dynamic therapies with an evidence base.

The extended DIT training is now being offered for counsellors and psychologists who do not meet these psychodynamic competencies. Within the 20 face-to-face teaching days and close clinical supervision of 3-4 cases, you will be taught the required competencies to deliver DIT effectively. This course is an extended version of the 5-day Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) course and is based on the approved extended national curriculum for DIT training.

What to expect from this training

Prospective trainees are required to complete and pass a pre-course test, along with the assigned pre-course readings, ahead of the training.

Once enrolled, trainees must complete two out of three training cases in person, only one case can be carried out remotely. Seeing patients face-to-face provides the full experience necessary to develop DIT psychodynamic competences.

To see a full list of expectations, please download the application pack from the 'How to apply' drop-down on the main DIT page.

Who is this training for?

This is a postgraduate certificate training and we require a Diploma level qualification in counselling (not necessarily psychodynamic) or a psychology doctorate degree (clinical, counselling, health or forensic) as the minimum entry requirement. Applicants will need to have a current, full BPC, BACP, UKCP, HCPC or BABCP registration as part of their core qualification. There is no requirement for experience of personal psychodynamic psychotherapy although this would be preferable and we would encourage you to access this during the training. Applicants from NHS Talking Therapies services may qualify for a fully funded place on this training. Applicants should contact their service lead or DIT@annafreud.org to find out whether their service has been allocated any funded places by the NHS. If an applicant wishes to self-fund this training and is based in the UK, they should please contact DIT@annafreud.org to discuss this option. Please see the 'How to apply' section below to find out about our application process.
