About this training

The training aims to develop advanced skills in group and individual supervision of IPT practice and provide participants with advanced knowledge and theoretical understanding of IPT.

It will extend the knowledge and skills of qualified IPT practitioners in the clinical application of IPT across all focal areas and a range of clinical presentations. This training will consolidate IPT practitioner skills and develop knowledge and understanding of the skills required to supervise in a peer and accreditation setting.

Trainees will develop skills in evaluating adherence to the IPT model, communicating effectively and constructively on the successful application of knowledge and techniques, and managing and supporting change in non-adherent practice. The module will equip trainees with knowledge and understanding of the importance of communication skills, conceptualization skills, evaluation skills, supporting skills transfer from alternative approaches, promoting the development of new skills and adapted application of existing skills in IPT trainees.

What training is on offer?

The training consists of three components:

  • Teaching: six teaching days delivered over nine months.

  • Advanced Practice Training: weekly facilitated peer supervision on two IPT/IPT-A cases. Trainee supervisors will provide peer supervision, including review of recordings, in addition to receiving supervision on two cases. IPT UK supervisor accreditation requires completed casework using each of the four IPT focal areas during practitioner and supervisor training. For some therapists, this may require more than six cases to be conducted to complete the training portfolio.

  • Supervisory Practice Training: weekly individual supervision and assessment of supervision competence when providing supervision on at least two cases with a novice IPT practitioner. This casework is conducted after completion of advance practice training.

This training aims to:

  • develop advanced practical skills in delivering IPT

  • develop advanced skills in IPT case formulation and conceptualisation as a basis for self-assessment and peer supervision

  • develop an understanding of the competency framework for IPT and its application in clinical supervision

  • provide a framework for clinical practice and supervision in IPT that is in accordance with IPT UK standards and IPT Supervisor competencies

  • develop practical competencies in using the IPT competency framework to supervise Interpersonal Psychotherapy and integrate with generic competencies in delivering and supervising psychological therapy

  • contribute in part to completion of IPT UK accreditation as an IPT supervisor (including in an NHS TT setting).

Who is this training for?

This training is suitable for IPT practitioners who have completed practitioner level accreditation and have registered with IPT UK. Practitioners must also have completed at least four IPT cases under accreditation level supervision.

Applicants must hold current accreditation with IPT UK and have been recommended for advanced training by their IPT or IPT-A supervisors. Applicant’s service manager and clinical lead must support their delivery of IPT or IPT-A supervision within their own service and across other service.

Qualified IPT supervisors are also welcome to attend to develop competence in using a competency-based protocol for IPT supervision or to become accredited as an HEE Talking Therapies IPT supervisor.
