About this training 

This course offers an introduction to Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) as a disorder of mentalizing, alongside practical clinical skills for application in healthcare and criminal justice settings. Mentalization-Based Treatment has been adapted for working with people with antisocial personality disorder (MBT-ASPD).

Participants will explore ASPD through a mentalizing and developmental lens, develop skills in clinical formulation, and learn to deliver basic mentalizing interventions with ASPD clients.

Aims of this training 

The training aims to support participants to develop:

  • an understanding of violence from a mentalizing perspective

  • a developmental and mentalizing understanding of ASPD

  • skills in mentalization-based formulation for ASPD

  • clinical skills for individual and group MBT with people with ASPD.

Teaching methods

Teaching will include short lectures, role play, video material and group discussion. By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • articulate ASPD as a disorder of mentalizing

  • discuss developmental perspectives on mentalizing, antisocial behaviour and violence

  • clinically formulate clients with antisocial personality disorder

  • deliver basic mentalizing interventions for people with ASPD.

Who should attend?

This workshop is suitable for mental health and other professionals interested in the treatment of personality disorder. Applicants must meet the following pre-entry criteria:

  • be engaged in MBT treatment for people with personality disorder

  • be undertaking supervised practice when working with people with personality disorder

  • have a basic understanding of criminal justice systems

  • aim to work with or treat people with antisocial personality disorder.
