UK Trauma Council Insight Series Webinar - When There is More to Fear Than Fear Itself: Adapting Therapeutic Practice
How do we support children and young people when the threat in their lives remains present? Join our speakers as they examine what it means to offer trauma-informed care when the environment itself may still be unsafe.
About this webinar
This webinar will explore how to think about trauma and recovery when children and young people continue to live with risk. Drawing on clinical work in contexts shaped by gang violence, war, terrorism and paramilitary control, the speakers will examine what it means to offer trauma-informed care when the environment itself may still be unsafe.
We will consider how to set and hold context, and how to support children and young people who are constantly assessing danger and adapting to threat. The session will explore the psychological and psychosomatic impact of living under pressure, and how to work with this in ways that are grounded, responsive and led by the needs of each individual.
The webinar will also address key ethical questions around waiting fo risk to reduce before intervening. It will offer practical tools to help children and young people distinguish between real, perceived and magnified threats, and explore how to support them in developing a sense of vigilance that protects rather than overwhelms.
Chaired by David Trickey (UK Trauma Council), with contributions from Dr Ron Dodzro [Psychologists The Streets Deserve (PTSD)], and Professor Alastair Black (UK Trauma Council), this session brings together clinical insight and thoughtful practice for those working with children and young people affected by community violence, family violence, refugee and asylum seeker families, or any context where safety remains unstable or uncertain.
Aims of the webinar
To better equip all those supporting children and young people exposed to trauma
To increase knowledge, skills and confidence in professionals and carers
To share the latest evidence-based research to inform and support best practice.
Who is this webinar for?
The UKTC Insight Series webinars are aimed at professionals supporting children and young people who have experienced trauma.
