Managing anxiety in children and young people

Supporting children and young people who feel anxious or worried at school. Anxiety is a normal emotion – it’s one of our body’s natural reactions to stress, however difficulties can arise when normal levels of anxiety become more severe and start impacting a child’s everyday life. On this course you will learn more about anxiety in children and young people and develop ideas and strategies to support them to manage it effectively.

About this training

For children and young people, some level of anxiety is normal as they grow up and learn to navigate the world. However, it’s important that they have the tools to manage feelings of anxiety, and can tell the difference between normal emotions and more severe anxiety which is interfering with their everyday life.

This course helps school staff to understand the different ways that anxiety can present, including the physical symptoms, as well as how to identify when feeling anxious is becoming a serious problem for a child or young person.

We will explore the underlying causes of anxiety; the impact of current mental health challenges and what school staff can do to help. You will learn what keeps anxiety going and develop tools and strategies to support children and young people when they are feeling anxious.

Aims of this training

  • Understand the physiological changes that can occur when feeling anxious

  • Be able to use a range of practical tools and skills to support children and young people to manage anxiety.

  • Gain access to trusted mental health and wellbeing resources and sources of support.
