Learning Together Mental Health (LTMH)
An introduction to the Learning Together Mental Health programme and the research examining how it supports pupils’ mental health, belonging and learning in secondary schools.
About the programme
Learning Together Mental Health (LTMH) is a whole-school, multi-component intervention that aims to improve academic outcomes, mental health, pupils’ sense of belonging and engagement with school, while also reducing bullying by fostering a positive school climate.
LTMH involves training in, and the embedding of, restorative practices alongside pupil-staff action groups, supported by a variety of optional, evidence-based interventions. As part of the delivery, schools also receive a pupil needs assessment report to help identify the type of support required in their setting.
About the evaluation
Delivery of the LTMH programme is being led by Place2Be across a large number of secondary schools in England. The Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) has commissioned Ipsos and Anna Freud to carry out an independent education evaluation.
The education evaluation will assess the impact of the programme on:
academic attainment (GCSE scores in Year 11)
pupils’ mental health
experiences of bullying
feelings of school belonging
school engagement
The education evaluation also includes an implementation and process evaluation (IPE).
A separate research team from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine is using data from this evaluation to conduct a health evaluation.
