Improving Mood with Psychoanalytic and Cognitive Therapies (IMPACT)

Around one in ten young people referred to CAMHS is diagnosed with depression, with lasting risks into adulthood. The IMPACT trial responds to NICE guidance by evaluating CBT and short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy.

In the UK, around one in ten young people referred to child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) receives a diagnosis of depression. Adolescent depression is strongly associated with recurrent depressive episodes and an increased risk of suicidality in later life, underlining the importance of early and effective intervention.

In 2005, National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines identified the need for a large-scale randomised controlled trial (RCT) to assess the effectiveness of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) and short-term psychoanalytic psychotherapy (STPP) for adolescent depression. The IMPACT trial was established in response to these recommendations and is the largest clinical trial of psychological therapies for adolescent depression ever conducted in Europe.
