Explore the framework in more detail below.

What is the 5 Steps framework?

The 5 Steps Framework is a free, evidence-based offer created by mental health and education experts at Anna Freud to help schools and colleges take a whole-setting approach to mental health and wellbeing.

The framework complements the eight principles outlined in the Department for Education’s guidance on a whole-school or college approach and reflects key recommendations from NICE on promoting social, emotional and mental wellbeing in education. It is designed to help your community thrive by promoting a sense of belonging and wellbeing, strengthening partnerships with families, and supporting staff wellbeing – all underpinned by strong leadership.

Why use the 5 Steps framework?

Evidence shows that when schools and colleges take a whole-setting approach, it can improve attainment and attendance alongside supporting wellbeing.

In this short video, Natalie Merrett, Head of Knowledge Dissemination in Schools at Anna Freud, explores why a whole-school or college approach to mental health is so important and how the 5 Steps framework supports this work.

How does it work?

The 5 Steps framework is built around five key areas of action that support a whole-school or college approach to mental health and wellbeing.

Each step includes practical actions that can be adapted to your setting, supported by evidence-informed practice, free or low-cost resources and real-life case studies from education staff who have implemented the framework in their setting.

The steps are designed to be used flexibly. While all five areas are important, every setting is different and priorities can change over time. You can start with the area that feels most relevant to your current focus, rather than following the steps in a fixed order. The framework is free to explore and use without registering or logging in.

To make the most of the 5 Steps framework and support ongoing development in your setting, we recommend using our action planning tool alongside it. This tool helps you put the framework into practice. It’s free to use, but you’ll need to register for an account and log in.

With the tool, you can:

  • choose and record the actions you want to work on

  • track your progress and reflect on what’s working well

  • use RAG (red, amber, green) ratings to see where you are now and where you’d like to be

  • update your plan at any time and download your results to share.
