Moving up! The transition to secondary school

This animation and accompanying teacher toolkit is aimed at supporting pupils who have recently started Year 7, or are due to start soon.

About the animation

This animation is designed to help Year 6 and 7 pupils feel more confident, less anxious and better equipped to manage the changes that come with moving to secondary school.

It is supported by lesson activities and an assembly plan, enabling pupils to discuss potential worries and explore solutions together.

How it supports pupils

Developed in collaboration with young people, teachers and mental health experts, the animation aims to help pupils:

  • identify common worries about starting secondary school

  • understand they are not alone if they feel anxious

  • talk to a trusted adult or friend about their concerns

  • develop strategies and solutions for looking after their mental health, including self-care.
