An Introduction to Working with Short Term Groups in NHS Talking Therapies

This one-day online training is designed to complement and assist staff with the delivery of therapies in group settings in NHS Talking Therapies.

About this training

This training provides a model for understanding group process based on psychodynamic theory. The day will consist of a mixture of theoretical presentation alongside small and large group discussions of key themes. Participants are encouraged to reflect on their own experiences in offering group-based interventions.

Please note that this training is a requirement to go on to our in-person Group Dynamic Interpersonal Training (DIT).

Aims of this training

  • To explore the benefits of a well-run group in assisting the delivery of therapies

  • To provide an understanding on how to work with challenges and conflict in a group

  • To delve into the group process, dynamic administration and co-facilitation dynamics aspects of working with groups

Who is this training for?

This training is suitable for anyone offering interventions in a group format in NHS Talking Therapies. This could be psychoeducational, guided self-help courses run by Psychological Wellbeing Practitioners (PWPs), counselling for depression groups, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy groups, cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) groups aimed at symptom reduction, as well as dynamic interpersonal therapy (DIT) practitioners interested in delivering DIT in a group format and going on to the further training in DIT Group.

This training has a wider focus than DIT and is open to all NHS Talking Therapies staff working with groups.
