DIT CPD Refresher Series: Goals in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT)

The second session of the ongoing DIT CPD Refresher Series delves into goals in DIT for qualified practitioners who want to revisit the topic and strengthen their skills.

About this training

This interactive workshop will explore how therapeutic goals in Dynamic Interpersonal Therapy (DIT) develop from the Interpersonal-Affective Focus (IPAF) and how they can be used to support meaningful change throughout treatment.

We will begin by considering how to collaboratively develop clear, relevant goals with patients at the end of the initial phase, grounded in their IPAF. We will then explore how these goals can guide the work during the middle phase, particularly in helping patients recognise and make changes in their relationship patterns.

The workshop will also consider the unconscious dimensions of DIT and how therapists can facilitate change while keeping the IPAF and therapeutic goals in mind. Through discussion and clinical examples, participants will have opportunities to think about how changes in relationship patterns emerge and develop within sessions, and how these changes can be reviewed and consolidated during the ending phase.

Aims of this training

  • To understand the purpose of goal-setting in DIT and consider how goals can provide a meaningful direction for the therapeutic work.

  • To develop collaborative therapeutic goals that are relevant to and emerge naturally from the patient’s IPAF.

  • To use goals to guide the middle phase of therapy, linking them to the IPAF while maintaining a focus on changes in relationship patterns.

  • To identify and explore changes in relationship patterns as they emerge within sessions and in patients’ lives during the middle phase.

  • To work with the unconscious dimensions of DIT and consider how these may influence patients’ relationship patterns and the process of change.

  • To review and consolidate therapeutic change during the ending phase, including reflecting on the goals established earlier in treatment and the changes patients have made.

Who is this training for?

This training is for qualified DIT practitioners who would like to refresh their skills. It is also suitable for those who have completed the 5-day or 20-day DIT training but have not gone on to supervised practice, not completed their case study, or not had formal supervision of their DIT work and have since stopped using it in their NHS Talking Therapies practice.

The DIT Refresher training is also suitable for those who are currently undergoing DIT practitioner training via the 5-day or 20-day training routes, but have been delayed in their progress and are in need a refresher.

The training builds on prior knowledge of the DIT model. It is a requirement for practitioners who have not started supervised DIT practice within six months of completing their training and need to refresh their knowledge of the model.

It is optional for anyone currently working within the DIT model who would like to revisit the this topic.
