A two-day online training for NHS clinical leads and service managers to learn how to implement Structured Clinical Management (SCM) based approach for supporting individuals with complex emotional needs — within their services effectively and sustainably.
About this training
This two-day online training programme is designed to support the implementation of Structured Clinical Management (SCM) in NHS Trusts. SCM is an evidence-based, cost-effective intervention for individuals with complex emotional and relational difficulties, often diagnosed with personality disorders.
The course provides clinical leads and service managers with the practical knowledge and leadership skills required to scope, plan, staff, train, and integrate SCM within their services. It addresses challenges around workforce development, risk management, and system-level integration, aiming to improve patient outcomes and ensure sustainability.
Objectives:
Participants will leave with the tools and confidence to lead SCM implementation in their organisations, improving service delivery for patients with complex emotional needs.
Understand SCM’s evidence base and practical benefits
Plan and scope SCM service delivery
Create staffing and supervision models
Integrate SCM within existing NHS systems and governance structures
Evaluate and sustain SCM services over time

It is ideal for those leading change initiatives, managing multidisciplinary teams, or responsible for embedding structured interventions into existing mental health care pathways. No prior SCM experience is required, but familiarity with mental health service operations is recommended.

David Rawlinson David Rawlinson is the SCM co-ordinator and tutor at Anna Freud and Consultant Psychological Therapist; Associate Psychological Services Director - Community and Access; at West Cumbria Mental Health Community Treatment Team (CTT) and Complex Emotional Needs pathway lead in North Cumbria. Mark Sampson Mark Sampson is a consultant clinical psychologist and the clinical lead for personality disorder for 5bp NHS Foundation Trust. Mark has extensive experience in personality disorder – he has been involved in local and national policy development (e.g. NICE guideline development group BPD) and is a member of the Clinical Reference Group for tier 4 personality disorder.
