Strategies for Safety and Wellbeing in Secondary Schools in Wales

About this training

Strategies for Safety and Wellbeing (SSW) is a curriculum-based approach involving training teachers in Wales to deliver eight lessons on how to look after your mental health, knowing when help from others is needed and being aware of support networks.

This training is also available for teachers and staff in primary schools.

What you can gain from this training

By the end of the training session, you will have:

  • an understanding of the findings of the research trial and the impact on the secondary schools learners involved.

  • explored the impact of safety-based skills as a secondary school-based intervention.

  • an understanding of how to encourage learners in Year 7 to increase their skills around safety, mental health and wellbeing and how to access appropriate sources of support.

How the programme works

The programme includes training for practitioners, implementation support and support for school leads to integrate the programme into a whole school approach.

This training for practitioners is delivered across one morning or afternoon session and is primarily delivered online with some in-person sessions.

Agenda

Module one (1 hour) - Introduction to the Strategies for Safety and Wellbeing Programme and the research behind it.

Module two (1 hour) - Safety in Schools: What is safety, why is it is important to think about, ways to stay safe and how to develop a shared language around safety and mental health.

Break (10 mins)

Module three (1 hour, 10 mins) - Delivery: Reviewing lesson plans, sharing resources and how to overcome potential barriers.

Who is this training for?

Three to four practitioners from every maintained secondary school in Wales are eligible to attend the training.

This course is:

  • free to take part

  • suitable for teachers and staff in secondary schools

  • available in Welsh and English

  • not suitable for staff working exclusively in early years, sixth forms or colleges.
