What is Structured Clinical Management (SCM)?

SCM provides generalist mental health staff with a clear, systematic approach to supporting people with borderline personality disorder (BPD). Rooted in a supportive framework, SCM combines case management, advocacy, practical problem-solving, effective crisis planning, regular medication reviews, and assertive follow-up when appointments are missed, ensuring consistent, comprehensive care.

Why invest in SCM?

SCM helps general mental health services better meet the needs of people with BPD by enhancing the capacity to manage severe cases within the community and reducing reliance on inpatient beds. It builds on existing knowledge and skills within the workforce, making it a straightforward and accessible approach to implement.

The training consists of three full days and equips generalist mental health staff with a coherent, systematic framework for working with this population. It emphasises case management, advocacy, practical problem-solving, crisis planning, regular medication review, and assertive follow-up to promote consistent care.

To achieve SCM Practitioner status, participants must complete 12 months of implementation supervision and attend a one-day follow-up session six months after completing the core training.

Aims of SCM training

By the end of the three-day training, participants will:

  • Understand the rationale and evidence base for SCM

  • Have increased awareness of personality disorder

  • Develop skills to treat people with personality disorder alongside affective and other disorders

  • Be able to implement strategic and core SCM processes.

Who should attend SCM training?

SCM is designed for all mental health professionals working with individuals diagnosed with personality disorders or whose personality traits affect treatment. No specialist psychological training is required.

SCM has been successfully implemented by general mental health staff without additional specialist qualifications. It is particularly suited to mental health nurses, graduate workers, and other practitioners supporting individuals with personality disorders.
