Mentalization-Based Treatment for Families
About this course
The training programme for Mentalization Based Treatment for Families (MBT-F) aims to equip mental health and allied professionals with the necessary skills to implement MBT-F. Individuals can be trained to either basic, practitioner or supervisor level.
Attendance at the three-day MBT-F Basic training is required to progress onto the Practitioner stage. This three-day course will provide participants with the knowledge and skills to progress to MBT-F Practitioner Level. Following attendance at the three-day basic course, clinicians can participate in supervision to embed their newly acquired mentalizing skills and become an MBT-F Practitioner.
MBT-F is one of a number of emerging adaptations of MBT (read more). It focuses on the application of mentalizing ideas to work with families, and will be of great relevance to those who already work therapeutically with children and families. The three-day training will focus primarily on the clinical practice of MBT-F, through extended role play, video watching and video recorded practice. The training will provide a thorough introduction to core skills used in MBT-F including
• the clinician’s stance,
• interventions to promote mentalizing between family members,
• and to disrupt non-mentalizing patterns of relating.
The course is delivered in two parts, each consisting of two consecutive days.
Days 1 and 2 are devoted, in part, to the theory and research base of mentalization based treatment. There is a lively introduction to clinical skills, with opportunities to begin practising the core features of the MBT-F model.
Days 3 allows intensive practice of a wider range of MBT-F techniques, including games and activities suitable for children, under the supervision of the MBT-F trainers. In this part we also introduce tools of assessment for the clinician’s adherence to the MBT-F model, and for assessing mentalizing capacity within a family. Finally, we provide an opportunity to practice newly acquired skills with actors taking the roles of family members, on video.
Who is this course suitable for?
Applicants should have a mental health qualification e.g. child psychotherapy, psychology, psychotherapy, family therapy, counselling, psychiatry, mental health nursing, social work, and should have experience of working therapeutically with families. The course assumes prior experience of therapeutic work with children and families and does not provide an introduction at this level.
From 1st May 2018, it will be a requirement that attendees of this training must complete the MBT Online training before the training start date. You will be given access to the Online training one month before the training start date. The Online training consists of a series of short videos that span four hours and cover the theory of MBT and so it is essential that you watch these prior to the training. If you do not complete these, you will not have the theoretical knowledge to get the most out of the training you are scheduled to attend. The content of the Online training will not be covered in the in-person training. If, for any reason, you require access to the Online training sooner than one month prior to the training start date, please let us know and we will be able to grant you access. Please note that training places must be paid for in order to be granted access to the Online training.
Aims of the course?
The aim of the course is to provide mental health professionals with a basic foundation in MBT-F to progress to Practitioner Level qualification in MBT-F.
The training willenable delegates to apply the approach to children with a range of emotional and behavioural difficulties, and their families.
At the end of the three days, participants can choose to undertake MBT-F practice in their own settings, supervised by the Anna Freud National Centre for Children & Families trainers or other supervisors experienced in MBT-F (subject to supervisor availablity), to achieve Practioner Level in MBT-F. Practitioner Level in MBT-F comprises:
• Attendance on the three-day course
• Practice video from the course
• Submission of video clips of two supervised cases (minimum of two short clips per case) in participant’s own clinical setting
• Supervisor’s written report
Assessment of the video clips and supervisor’s report will be carried out by MBT-F clinicians and trainers at the Anna Freud National Centre for Children and Families. Fees for supervision and assessment can be given on request. Following satisfactory completion of supervision, delegates will be recognised as an MBT-F Practitioner.
